Overview

The Footsteps of Lord Buddha tour takes you on a journey to the most significant Buddhist pilgrimage sites in India and Nepal, including Bodhgaya, where Buddha attained enlightenment, Sarnath, where he delivered his first sermon, Kushinagar, where he achieved Mahaparinirvana, and Lumbini in Nepal, his birthplace. You'll also have the opportunity to explore some notable historical sites such as the Amber Fort, City Palace, Red Fort, Jama Masjid, and the iconic Taj Mahal.

Detail Itinerary

On arrival in Delhi, meet our representative, who will transfer you to a hotel in Delhi. The evening will be free for leisure.

After breakfast at the hotel, visit the Red Fort in Old Delhi, named for its red-sandstone walls and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In front of the Red Fort is the imperial avenue known as Chandni Chowk. Enjoy Rickshaw rides in Chandni Chowk and pass through alleyways, the Jama Masjid, the largest Muslim mosque in India.

Continue to visit Qutub Minar and India Gate, a 42 metres archway built for the memorial of Indian soldiers killed during the First World War. Carry on our tour, and drive past the President's House, the Parliament House.

After breakfast at the hotel check out and drive to Jaipur, upon arrival check in at the hotel and rest of the day is free for your own leisure.

After breakfast, the day starts with the excursion to Amber Fort, built in the 16th century by Raja Mansingh in red sandstone and white marble. The palace complex has some very interesting apartments. Jai Mandir, Sheesh Mahal, Sukh Niwas, and Temple of Kali are prominent areas of interest. Elephants are provided to ascend the fort to visit the complex. 

Proceed to visit Maharaja’s City Palace-the home of the erstwhile royal family. Drive past Jal Mahal and Hawa Mahal, the Palace of Winds, built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh & also drive past the old part of Jaipur.

Leave Jaipur for Agra by driving en route to visit Fatehpur Sikri.

Fatehpur Sikri is one of the finest examples of Mughal architecture, built-in 1569. Fatehpur Sikri is the best example of the culmination of Hindu and Muslim architecture.

Continue driving to Agra. Upon arrival, transfer to the Hotel for check-in and prepare for the Agra excursion. Start a guided tour of Mehtab Bagh for a breathtaking view of the Taj Mahal from the Yamuna River's banks. Afterward, you will be returned to your hotel for an overnight stay.

The tour of the Taj Mahal in the early morning starts at sunrise. An immense mausoleum of white marble was built in Agra between 1631 and 1648 by order of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, Mumtaz. The Taj Mahal is the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage. 

After the visit, get back to the hotel for breakfast and check out and take a flight to Varanasi. Upon arrival check in at the hotel and rest for the day. Overnight stay in the hotel.

In the early morning, experience a boat ride along the Ganges River to witness the rituals performed at the Ghat. It's always a fascinating experience to watch people worshipping the Sun and performing their rituals. Once you return to the hotel, enjoy a delicious breakfast before embarking on a sightseeing tour of the city. The tour includes visits to the Bharat Mata Temple, Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Banaras Hindu University, and an art gallery. Later on, you can visit Sarnath, which is just 10 km away from Varanasi. This is the place where Buddha preached his first sermon more than 2500 years ago. Here, you can see the massive Dhamek stupa erected by Emperor Ashoka and an Archeological Museum that houses a rare collection of manuscripts and other items related to Lord Buddha. After sightseeing, return to the hotel for a comfortable overnight stay.

After breakfast, drive to Bodh Gaya. On arrival at Bodh Gaya, check in at the hotel. In the evening, attend a lecture on the life and teachings of Buddha was given by a knowledgeable local Buddhist monk and scholar. Overnight stay at the hotel.

After breakfast, the tour begins with a briefing about Bodhgaya. Start the sightseeing with a visit to Mahabodhi Temple, which includes tall stone lotuses, figures of Buddha sitting in different postures on the walls, his footprints on the stones, and a colossal golden Buddha in the sanctum sanctorum. The temple is an immense attraction to the Buddhists and stands near the Maha Bodhi tree under which Gautama attained enlightenment. It is a must-visit not only due to its importance but also for the architecture and the art objects. 

Mahabodhi Tree: The tree is considered holy since Lord Buddha attained enlightenment under it. It is the fifth succession of the original tree. Overnight stay at the hotel.

Start your day with a hearty breakfast, and then head towards Patna. While en route, visit Nalanda University, founded in the 5th century B.C. Also, take some time to visit the archeological museum showcasing the Nalanda University seal, sculptures, and other remnants on the site. Later, drive for around 20 km to reach Rajgir. Here, visit Griddhakuta, also known as the "Hill of Vultures," where Buddha delivered some of his most famous sermons. Afterward, visit Saptaparni caves, where the first Buddha Council and the source of Rajgir's hot springs were held. Finally, proceed to Patna and check in at the hotel. Enjoy your overnight stay at the hotel.

After breakfast, drive to Kushinagar, where Buddha had his last breath. Upon arrival, transfer to the hotel for check-in and ready for the excursion. Visit Kushinagar – one of the principal centres of Buddhist Pilgrimage and where Lord Buddha passed away. The Monuments of Kushinagar are situated in three districts comprising the main site of Mahaparinirvana temple - which houses the recumbent figure of Lord Buddha, the Rambhar Stupa, where Lord Buddha was cremated, and the surroundings Monasteries. Overnight stay at the hotel.

After breakfast, it's time to check out from the hotel and make your way to Lumbini in Nepal, Lord Buddha's birthplace. Lumbini is a holy site for Buddhists and one of four important places in Buddhism. Once you arrive, check-in at your hotel and visit some of the main attractions. You visit the Maya Devi temple, the Stupas, and the Pillars. These pillars were put up by the Mauryan King Ashoka and had edicts inscribed on them. Lumbini isn't just a place for spiritual growth but also a peaceful and calming place where you can find solace and contentment. You'll spend the night at your hotel before continuing your journey.

After having breakfast, you can drive to Sravasti. En route, you can visit Kapilavastu, which was the place where Lord Buddha spent 29 years of his early life. At Kapilavastu, you will find a big stupa where Buddha's relics were discovered during excavations. Once you arrive at Sravasti, you can check in at your hotel and prepare for the excursion. 

Sravasti, also known as Sahet-Mahet, was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Kosala and an active centre for Buddhism. One of the major attractions of Sravasti is Jetavana, where Lord Buddha and his pilgrims once stayed. You can spend the night at your hotel.

After breakfast, drive to Lucknow. Upon arrival, transfer to the hotel, check-in and freshen up for Lucknow sightseeing. Visit starts with  Rumi Darwaza - Rumi Darwaza - An imposing gateway which Nawab Asaf-Ud-Daula built. Later proceed to Dilkusha Kothi, and the State Museum.

After breakfast at the hotel check out and transfer to Lucknow airport to board a flight for Delhi. Upon arrival at Delhi airport, transfer to the hotel for check-in. Rest of the day is leisure for your own activities. Overnight stay at the hotel.
